Andean Gourd Maraca – Handcrafted Rattle from Peru
Each maraca is a one-of-a-kind creation made from the bottle gourd (calabash), shaped by nature and brought to life by Andean artisans. This natural instrument offers a bright, multi-faceted sound and is adorned with meaningful hand-etched designs.
Filled with small beans, the gourd maraca produces a loud, precise rattling tone—perfect for rhythmic accents, swooshing effects, or gentle, meditative soundscapes. Its curved shape fits comfortably in the hand, making it easy to play for all ages.
According to ancient South American tradition, each maraca is crafted through a slow, careful process. After harvesting and drying, the gourd is smoked with fire to darken the surface. Artisans then engrave motifs from daily life—animals, plants, stars, or sacred symbols—onto the calabash, preserving cultural stories in every piece.
These maracas are not only ceremonial tools but also beautiful instruments for musical exploration, intuitive play, or children’s first rhythmic experiences.
Traditionally used in Andean rituals as solo instruments or in pairs for Caribbean rhythms, these maracas can be enjoyed in many ways—spiritually, musically, and artistically.
Care & Safety: Not a toy. Not suitable for children under 3. Keep away from extreme temperatures, moisture, and direct sunlight. Wipe with a damp cloth only; always dry after use.
